Mental Health

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. At Bellbowrie Family Practice, our doctors are skilled in the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of a range of mental health conditions. We offer professional, compassionate mental health care and counselling services for all age groups.

If you have been feeling like something isn’t quite right, if you need help in dealing with a demanding situation or time in your life, or if you believe that you could do with a mental health check up with one of our health professionals – we are here to help.

Mental health can be stigmatised in our society, but the most important things that you can do to care for yourself, or for a loved one who you believe may benefit from mental health services, is to make that first contact with our mental health doctors.

Our appointments are bulk-billed and completely confidential. Whether you require mental health services for an existing mental health condition, seeking help for the first time, or suspect that you are at risk, our mental health doctors offer professional and compassionate care for all mental health conditions.

Depending on your individual needs, we may:

  • Use questionnaires and assessment tests to diagnose a mental health condition
  • Prescribe medication
  • Refer you to our practice psychologist for specialist care
  • Arrange other referrals if required
  • Work with you on a long-term treatment or management plan

Mental Health Services

In order to receive counselling and treatment from a registered Psychologist, you do need a referral from your general practitioner. Our mental health doctors are well-trained in referring patients and can even help you gain a greater rebate from Medicare with a mental health plan. When you come in for an appointment to access mental health services, your doctor will assess you and work with you to find out the most appropriate person to refer you to.

Under your mental health care plan, you are entitled to receive up to 10 individual sessions in a calendar year. Your mental health doctor at Bellbowrie Family Practice will reassess your progress after your sixth session. The cost you will pay for your psychologist sessions will remain at the rate fixed by your treating doctor, but you will receive a Medicare rebate for treatment.
